Executive Board
Nona M. Lee - PWSA founder and presidentVice president and general counsel for the Arizona Diamondbacks
"Being on the PWSA Board is important to me because I believe in the power of sports in building and changing lives. Girls and women are behind the curve in terms of taking advantage of sports participation as a tool for building successful personal and professional lives. Through PWSA, we have an opportunity to educate girls and women in Arizona about the importance of participation in sports and fitness, and to provide participation opportunities."
Betsy Bombeck - Vice PresidentPresident-CEO, Bombeck-Loyd & Associates
Anne Caldwell President of Outsourcing Solutions, a human resource strategy firm, founded in 1993
When I was growing up, there really weren’t many sports opportunities for girls, so aside from trying out unsuccessfully for cheerleading, I never really got involved in sports. Then in 1996, a fluke social outing took me to my first WNBA game and I was hooked.
PWSA is important to me because I want my teenage daughter to have opportunities that I never had. I think the idea of supporting girls in sports makes so much sense, giving them an outlet that focuses their energy in such a positive, confidence-building direction.
Jodi Po Communications manager for nationally-ranked architectural/engineering firm
Have been active in sports all my life; worked as a newspaper sports editor for many years; did freelance writing for Cox on the Phoenix Mercury. Major sports thrill: rock climbing to the very top of Brown Mt.: the tallest of the Four Peaks.
Being active in PWSA is rewarding on many levels. It’s a thrill to work with the men and women of this community who support girls’ and women’s athletics. Participating in athletics has exponential positive dividends. It strengthens bodies, minds, spirits and communities. I believe if the nation’s youth had equal access to sports and recreation, we’d mitigate teen drug abuse, pregnancies, boredom and a host of other social challenges.
Brooke Todare – Secretary Arizona State University student pursuing a degree in psychology member of the ASU Women's golf team
I have played golf since I was eight years old and have never looked back. I attended Xavier College Prep where we won four State Championships and fulfilled a life long dream of playing for the Sun Devils. I am planning to play professional golf after college.
PWSA is important to me because it provides girls and women opportunities in sports that they might not have otherwise. Sports have taught me life lessons that have shaped me into the person I am today. I don't feel that there should be any obstacles that stand in a person's way of playing sports, and if there are, then PWSA will help knock them down.
Board of Directors Cindy Barnes Pharr, Ph.D.
Sports Background: Youth soccer and tennis player. Current sports: Golf, skiing, tennis, mountain biking and horse back riding.
"Being on the PWSA board is an honor to me. I grew up in a small community in which youth sports was the main activity. I saw the benefits of teamwork at an early age. Being a part of the PWSA board is a team effort of trying to improve the athletic activities of youth athletes throughout the state of Arizona. I hope I can do my part to contribute to this dedicated team."
Tanya L Supenski, CPAPresident of Bean-Counter
Sports background: "My involvement in sports has always been more for recreation than competition. I enjoy activities of all kinds, my favorite is hiking. During high school and college I was very involved in marching band. I played trombone in the marching band for nine years.”
Why PWSA is important to me: “I am continually inspired by women and the unending strength our gender possesses. PWSA is a great organization that helps foster that strength at an early age.”
Kathryn H Paulson
Financial Advisor at Dollarhide/Mass Mutual
As a financial coach, I work to help others formulate a game plan to assure a win in the game of life regardless of the opponent (i.e., taxes, inflation, the stock market, real estate). I assist my clients in co-coordinating and integrating all areas of their financial picture.
I have enjoyed sports since I was two years old and my mom nailed a rim to a fence post! In addition to all of the physical benefits sports brings all of us, I believe the mental benefits are even greater. I am confident that all the persistence I learned as a kid helps me in all aspects of my life today.
If I am able to help just one more girl have the opportunity to play sports at a higher level, or a young girl begin playing a sport, my purpose will be served!
Honorary Board of Directors
Sandy Cowen - President & Owner, The Cowen Agency Jennifer Gillom - Olympic and Professional Basketball player
Sports background: As far as I can remember, sports has been a part of my life. Athletics has taught me how to be a team player, to respect others, have integrity, self discipline, and above all how to compromise. Athletics has helped me develop into the person I am today. Why the PWSA is important to you: “I grew up with a very strong mother who was my first role model. Since then, I feel her strength and character have been instilled in me. When I think of the Phoenix Women’s Sports Association, the first thing that comes to mind is strong women with character who helped preserve and empower female athletes. Therefore, there is no doubt that it is such an honor to be a part of such a group.”
