Nyad to be PWSA Keynote Speaker

"You Don't Want to Miss" Diana Nyad as the Keynote Speaker for PWSA's 2008 Awards Dinner

Phoenix, AZDiana NyadThe Phoenix Women’s Sports Association (PWSA) is thrilled to announce that acclaimed marathon swimmer Diana Nyad will be the 2008 keynote speaker at PWSA’s Fifth Annual Power to Inspire Awards Dinner on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

Diana Nyad plunged into the record books in 1979 when she swam 102.5 miles from Bimini to Florida. From 1969 -1979, Nyad was the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1986.

In the 1980s, Diana started an illustrious career in television, radio and print. She has served as a senior correspondent for FOX Sports News, hosted her own show on CNBC, and announced numerous premier sporting events for ABC Sports. Diana also writes a weekly column for National Public Radio. She has written several books, and often contributes pieces to the New York Times, Self Magazine and other publications.

PWSA President Nona Lee has enjoyed Nyad’s entertaining and inspirational stage presence when Nyad hosted both The Billies in Los Angeles and the Women's Sports Foundation’s Annual Dinner in New York. “Beyond the fact that Diana swam 102.5 miles and was the first person to swim around Manhattan Island, she excels as an engaging, inspirational speaker, who you don’t want to miss.”

§          PWSA’s Individual Female Scholar / Athlete of the Year Award

§          PWSA’s Coach of a Girl’s/Woman's Sport of the Year Award

§          The Patsy Mink Achievement Award, recognizing a community leader or advocate for opportunities for girls and/or women’s sports

§          The Spirit of PWSA Award and Scholarship, recognizing an Arizona senior high school female athlete who intends to participate in sports in college and who embodies the spirit and ideals of PWSA

§          PWSA’s Outstanding Girls’ or Women’s Sports Team Award.

Sponsors for the 2008 dinner are Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Arizona Diamondbacks, Northern Trust Bank and Bristol Global Mobility. To receive additional information about attending or sponsoring the dinner, contact PWSA Board of Director Brooke Todare at btodare@asu.edu.

About PWSA

The Phoenix Women's Sports Association (PWSA) is a nonprofit organization formed to help girls and women find their power through sports. PWSA reaches out to all girls and women, particularly those from underserved communities, to give them opportunities to reach their greatest potential by building confidence and self-esteem through participation in sports and fitness activities. Research has documented the positive effects of girls' and women's participation in sports of all ages.

2007 Scholarships

This past year has been very successful for the PWSA/Arizona Quest for Kids’ Sports Scholarship Program. At its 2007 Awards Dinner, which featured Billie Jean King as the keynote speaker, $60,000 was raised dedicated to the sole purpose of granting club sports scholarships to young girls, who would not otherwise have been able to play due to financial constraints. PWSA granted five scholarships to three volleyball players, one soccer player and one basketball player. All five of these girls will continue to play the sports they love because of the funds they received from PWSA. These girls are not only great athletes, but tremendous students and all have potential to play at the collegiate level.
